CoinTrue: Value & Melt Scan
Getting Started
How do I identify a coin?
Tap "Scan a Coin" on the dashboard. Center the coin inside the on-screen ring with even, glare-free light, and capture it. For the best read, shoot both sides (front and back). You can also import an existing photo from your library. The result screen shows the coin's identity, an estimated value range, and — for silver and gold — its melt value.
Why is the value shown as a range instead of one number?
Because an honest value is a range. A coin's worth depends on grade, demand, and condition that a photo can't fully assess, so we show a low-to-high range with a confidence level rather than inventing one precise number that looks authoritative but isn't.
What does the confidence level mean?
It tells you how sure the app is about the identification. High confidence means a reliable match; low confidence is flagged so you can re-scan with better lighting and framing instead of trusting a guess.
Values & Melt
What is melt value?
For coins made of precious metal, melt value is what the raw silver or gold inside the coin is worth at current spot prices — calculated from the coin's weight and composition. It's a useful floor: a precious-metal coin is generally worth at least its melt value.
How accurate are the values? Is this an appraisal?
The values are honest estimates, not a certified grade or appraisal. They're a great starting point for understanding your collection, but for valuable coins you should confirm with a certified service like PCGS or NGC before buying, selling, or insuring.
How do spot prices update?
The app uses current silver and gold spot prices to compute melt value, and re-values your precious-metal coins as prices refresh — which is what builds your value-history charts over time. You can also enable optional notifications when prices move enough to be worth a re-check.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Scanning, identification, valuation, and your catalog all work on-device, even offline. A connection is only used to refresh metal spot prices and (on the free tier) to load ads.
Catalog & Tracking
How do I build my catalog?
After a scan, tap "Save to Catalog." You can add condition notes, a purchase price, and (on Premium) photos of both sides. Your dashboard shows your total collection value and recent scans, and the Catalog tab lets you search, sort, and filter by metal.
What are value-history charts?
For each coin, Premium shows a chart of how its value has moved as spot prices refresh over time — so you can watch your collection's worth change instead of guessing.
Can I export a report?
Yes. Premium lets you export a clean PDF report for any coin — handy for insurance records or your own files. Open a coin's detail screen and choose "Export PDF Report."
Free vs Premium
What's free vs Premium?
Free: up to 3 coin scans per day, a catalog of up to 15 coins, one photo per coin, honest value ranges and melt value, with banner and interstitial ads. Premium: unlimited identifications, an unlimited catalog with both-side photos, full value history and charts, PDF report export, and zero ads.
How much is Premium, and is there a free trial?
Premium is $4.99/month or $29.99/year (save 50%). The annual plan includes a 7-day free trial — you'll only be charged at the end of the trial, and you can cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings before it ends. There is no weekly plan.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open Settings inside the App and tap "Restore Purchases." This re-applies your active subscription if you've previously purchased one on this Apple ID.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the iOS Settings app, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find CoinTrue and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
Privacy
Where do my coin photos go?
They stay on your iPhone. The app does not upload your coin photos to any server — identification runs on-device. You can confirm by scanning with Airplane Mode on: it still works. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
What permissions does the app need?
Camera (only when you scan a coin), Photo Library read-only (only for the photo you pick to import), and Notifications (optional, for spot-price re-check alerts).
